I love nothing more than a restaurant that makes it easy to eat healthfully.

We had dinner at Tijuana Flats last night after discovering one not too far from the house. Tijuana Flats is a chain that serves Tex Mex style food that is just really, really good. There was one not too far from where I lived in Pennsylvania, but it closed down almost a year ago and I really missed it.

This Tijuana Flats was newer than my old one, and the menu had a little section I’d never seen before.

The “Lo” section was all items with fewer than 500 calories, if you get the whole wheat tortilla and order the meal “power lite.” (This does not include the side order of chips that comes with almost everything on the menu.) “Power lite” is what you say if you want low fat cheese and fat free sour cream. No special requests — they have their own word for a lightened-up version. So nice!

Fiance had never been to Tijuana Flats and ordered the black bean quesadilla.

I ordered the blackened chicken quesadilla.

We both really enjoyed our meals, but the music inside was super loud, which is something I don’t remember from my old Tijuana Flats. I guess we’re just old. πŸ™‚ We were going to eat outside by this beautiful Spanish moss, but we didn’t want to eat with the sun in our eyes.

If you’re into hot sauce, Tijuana Flats is also the place for you. They have a hot sauce bar, and the sauces all have fun names, like “Smack My Ass and Call Me Sally.” (The restaurant’s slogan is “Something may offend you, but it will never be the food.)

What’s your favorite healthy restaurant? I love how easy Tijuana Flats makes healthy choices, and I like Subway for the same reason.Β I love Panera’s food, but a lot of their stuff is hidden calorie and fat bombs — you really have to check the menu carefully before you go. Just because something is “healthy” doesn’t mean it is weight-loss friendly!
